
As part of the cultural season, the Department of English Language and Literature organized a lecture titled “Techniques for Interpreting Complex Sentences in English” on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Faculty of Arts in Sabah Al-Salem University City.
The lecture was presented by Dr. Ala’a Al-Kharabsha and moderated by Dr. Anood AlSharhan, with the organization of the cultural committee chair, Dr. Munira Al-Ajlan, and attended by numbers of faculty members and students.
During the lecture, Dr. Ala’a Al-Kharabsha explained metaphorical constructs through cognitive linguistics, referring to Langacker’s Profile Determinacy theory, the conceptual metaphor theory, and the cognitive conceptual integration theory. He analyzed two subtypes of these constructs metaphorical attributes and metaphorical descriptors highlighting the prevalence of metaphorical thinking and the effectiveness of cognitive models in understanding and translating these complex structures, according to the principle of “cognitive conceptual integration equivalence.”
