An Introductory Account
The Department of Arabic Language and Literature was established in 1966/1967, the year when Kuwait University was established. Through continuous and efficient work, the department made a good progress to fulfil its scientific and cultural mission. The department started within the branches of the "College of Arts and Education" in a yearsbased system, until 1975, when teaching changed to the courses system. In 1982/83, the department achieved tangible development and expansion. It separated from the Department of Education when the College of Arts separated from College of Education, with productive cooperation between the two colleges, as many students from the College of Education studied within the Arabic language specialty. A plethora of students in Kuwait university from various specialties benefit from subjects offered in the Arabic Language Department, such as Sharia and others. The department updates and improves its graduation sheet continuously so that it meets academic standards. The department of Arabic provided new courses to the university student in general culture, focusing on scientific analytical skills. It also offered a supporting specialization for the department's students (in which the student chooses courses from outside the department) or a sub-specialization in syntax and linguistics or in literature and criticism. The department also provided a minor specialization (Arabic language) for students of other departments at the university. The department offers a program for postgraduate studies (Master's) in linguistics, syntax, and literature and criticism. In order to follow academic progress, the department established a doctoral program in 2021, in Arabic linguistics, syntax, and literature and criticism.
