The Department of Arabic Language and Literature—An Introductory Account
The Department of Arabic Language and Literature was founded in 1966–1967, upon the establishment of Kuwait University (KU). The department has been making significant contributions to the realization of its scientific and civilization goals through its continuous and tireless efforts. The department has been striving to fulfill its academic mission by inducting highly qualified human resources and conducting research and studies that have made significant contributions to the academic, cultural, and literary development of society; promoted Arabic language; and enriched literary production, which earned the nation a distinguished status in cultural and literary arenas in the Gulf region, the Arab world, and international space.
The department endeavors to enrich and enhance the position and significance of Arabic language and its literature in society as a whole and in its body of students specifically to ensure quality output and proficient human resources in all areas and branches of literary and linguistic studies by offering a wide spectrum of courses in Arabic Language; Morphology and Grammar; Comparative Literature Modern Theories of Criticism, Arabic Rhetoric, Stylistic, and Quranic Studies. The department focuses on improving students’ reading, writing, and listening skills as well as developing their analytical and expressive capabilities.
Offered Programs/Curricula
· Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature (4 years).
· Higher/Postgraduate studies for MA degree and PhD in Arabic Language and Literature, Morphology, Grammar, Comparative Literature, Modern Criticism Theories, and Rhetoric.
· Courses for KU Education College students.
· Courses for KU Shari’a College students
A variety of courses and offerings are extended to all KU students in various colleges to enable them to develop various skills and proficiencies in Arabic language and its literature, such as Arabic Language Communication Skills 101 and The Aesthetics Arabic Literature 102.
Enrollment Requirements
· Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature (4 years) requires a High School Diploma—Art Section
· Postgraduate studies: According to the specifications mentioned by the department annually
Transfer Requirements
· Maximum completed credits: 24
· Minimum GPA: 2.67
· No less than C grade in the following courses:
o Arabic Language Communication Skills 101(C)
o The Aesthetics Arabic Literature 102 (C)
