An Introductory Account
The Department of Arabic Language and Literature was established in 1966–1967, with the founding of Kuwait University (KU). The department has made significant contributions to achieving its academic and cultural goals through its continuous and diligent efforts. It has worked tirelessly to fulfill its academic mission by recruiting highly qualified personnel and conducting research and studies that have greatly contributed to the academic, cultural, and literary development of society. These efforts have promoted the Arabic language and enriched literary production, earning the nation a distinguished status in the cultural and literary fields within the Gulf region, the Arab world, and on the global stage.
The department seeks to enrich and enhance the role and significance of the Arabic language and its literature both in society at large and among its students specifically. This is done to ensure the production of high-quality graduates and proficient human resources across all areas and branches of literary and linguistic studies. The department offers a wide range of courses in Arabic Language, Morphology and Grammar, Comparative Literature, Modern Theories of Criticism, Arabic Rhetoric, Stylistics, and Quranic Studies. It focuses on improving students’ reading, writing, and listening skills, as well as developing their analytical and expressive abilities.
Enrollment Requirements
- High School Diploma - Art Section.
- Postgraduate studies: According to the specifications mentioned by the department annually.
Transfer Requirements
- Maximum completed credits: 24
- Minimum GPA: 2.67
No less than C grade in the following courses:
- Arabic Language Communication Skills 101(C)
- The Aesthetics Arabic Literature 102 (C)
Internal Transfer Requirements
For the Class of 2020 and Earlier:
- The student must have completed at least 24 credit hours.
- The cumulative GPA must not be less than 2.67.
The student must have passed the following two courses with a minimum grade of C:
- Language Communication Skills (101)
- Aesthetics of Arabic Literature (102)
For the Class of 2021 and After:
- The student must have completed at least 24 credit hours.
- The cumulative GPA must not be less than 2.67.
The student must have passed the following two courses with a minimum grade of C:
- Writing Skills (118)
- Literary Library (112)

- Higher/Postgraduate studies for MA degree and PhD in Arabic Language and Literature, Morphology, Grammar, Comparative Literature, Modern Criticism Theories, and Rhetoric.

Courses for KU Shari’a College students.
A variety of courses and offerings are extended to all KU students in various colleges to enable them to develop various skills and proficiencies in Arabic language and its literature, such as Arabic Language Communication Skills 101 and The Aesthetics Arabic Literature 102.
