Arabic Language and Literature Department

An Introductory Account

The Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Kuwait University offers a broad range of topics dedicated to the study of the Arabic language. Building upon the core subjects of Arabic - grammar, morphology, rhetoric, and literary criticism - the department provides diverse academic pathways within its curriculum. 

The linguistics track focuses on the study of various aspects of general language use, while the literature and criticism track examines Arabic texts from artistic and rhetorical perspectives, both theoretical and applied. 

The department is committed to continually updating its curriculum to ensure alignment with current academic standards at all levels of study, including both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. 

 

Vision

To strengthen engagement with Arab culture through its linguistic and literary heritage, while embracing modern theories and contemporary applications in the study of language. 

Objectives

  • To enhance linguistic communication skills and raise the proficiency of graduates in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 
  • To promote scientific research in linguistics and literature, and to employ modern technologies in support of applied linguistic inquiry.

Internal Transfer Requirements

For the Class of 2020 and Earlier:

  • The student must have completed at least 24 credit hours.
  • The cumulative GPA must not be less than 2.67.
  • The student must have passed the following two courses with a minimum grade of C:

    - Language Communication Skills (101)

    - Aesthetics of Arabic Literature (102)

 

For the Class of 2021 and After:

  • The student must have completed at least 24 credit hours.
  • The cumulative GPA must not be less than 2.67.
  • The student must have passed the following two courses with a minimum grade of C:

    - Writing Skills (118)

    - Literary Library (112)

 

Offered Programs/Curricula

  • Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature (4 years).
  • Higher/Postgraduate studies for MA degree and PhD in Arabic Language and Literature, Morphology, Grammar, Comparative Literature, Modern Criticism Theories, and Rhetoric.
  • Courses for KU Education College students.
  • Courses for KU Shari’a College students.

     

A variety of courses and offerings are extended to all KU students in various colleges to enable them to develop various skills and proficiencies in Arabic language and its literature, such as Arabic Language Communication Skills 101 and The Aesthetics Arabic Literature 102.
