The Cultural Committee in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature held a lecture titled “Manifestations of high places in nabati poetry,” presented by Dr. Hamad Al-Ajmi and moderated by Dr. Mohammed Al-Qanai, the Acting Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, with the attendance of the committee’s chair, Prof. Nouriya Al-Roumi. The lecture took place on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Southern Theater of the College of Arts, in the presence of several faculty members and students .
The lecture addressed the various instances of elevation in nabati poetry and their diverse uses. Dr. Al-Ajmi explained how elevation is used in situations of sadness, anticipation, fear, desire, pride, and joy. He presented examples for each usage, noting that rising above sadness through resisting nature and existential isolation eases the human experience of sadness. This is because when one is elevated, they perceive everything beneath them as small, distancing themselves geographically from others .
He also added a spiritual dimension to this, explaining that ascending to isolated geographic locations brings humans closer to God.
At the end of the lecture, Prof. Nouriya Al-Roumi, chair of the Cultural Committee, honored Dr. Hamad Al-Ajmi for enriching the cultural season of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature with this insightful lecture.
